This majestic tree lived right on the ocean in Saltair on Vancouver Island, GPS at 48 56’47”N, 123 44’45”W. It witnessed wooden ships sailing by, then steamers and finally, yachts and cruise ships powered past. It stood witness to the changes in time, technology and history. We always wonder here at the studio, just how many people ever stopped to truly appreciate its grandeur. There’s no doubt that the children who grew up on the property spent many hours climbing around in its magnificent branches.
The 125-year-oldBig Leaf Western Maple in these pictures is one of the biggest trees we have ever salvaged. Measuring nearly 8 meters in circumference at the base, it would take at least four people holding hands to circle the whole tree!
